Help play an important role in the health of Minnesotans by researching and evaluating psychedelic medicine for the treatment of mental health and medical conditions. The Drug Overdose Prevention Unit of the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease (HPCD) Division at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking a temporary Research Scientist 3 to provide support for the new Psychedelic Medicine Taskforce.
The position will be researching MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), psilocybin, and LSD; providing analysis and reports integral to developing a comprehensive plan to cover necessary recommendations such as statutory changes and regulations for legalization of psychedelic medicine.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Compile, Interpret, analyze and report on the scientific literature and other sources of information on the therapeutic efficacy of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), psilocybin, and LSD.
- Interpret, analyze and report on the information gathered to compare the efficacy of these three drugs in treating conditions with the efficacy of treatments currently being used.
- Policy development.
This position is temporary with an anticipated end date of 06/30/2025. Work may be conducted in-person in St. Paul, or as telework for residents of MN, IA, WI, ND, SD, based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion. Position location will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of a Minnesota Department of Health district office.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years professional experience in health related research design and methodology. Resumes must clearly indicate research design and methodology experience which must include one or more of the following:
- Analysis and interpretation of research and scientific literature
- Interpretation of program outcome and evaluation data
- Data collection and analysis, data quality assurance and cleaning.
A degree in public health, epidemiology, biology, pharmacy, nursing, psychology, social work, biostatistics, or related field may count towards professional experience as follows:
- Master’s = 18 months
- Doctoral = 24 months
Ability and skills to be assessed during interview process:
- Ability to identify and evaluate relevant information and make recommendations.
- Human relations and communication skills sufficient to achieve effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to present results clearly and effectively in writing and effectively organize and synthesize material from diverse sources into comprehensive reports for a variety of audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in public health, epidemiology, biology, pharmacy, nursing, psychology, social work, biostatistics.
- Experience with research methodology, and psychedelic medicine.
- Experience using appropriate methodology to answer complex research questions.
- Ability to review, analyze and interpret. scientific studies and other sources of information regarding psychedelic medicine effectiveness, efficacy and adverse effect.
- Knowledge of MDH authority and responsibilities for collecting, protecting, analyzing, and disseminating data.
- Ability to identify and evaluate scientific literature, synthesize relevant information, and make recommendations
- Knowledge of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
Additional Requirements
- Must successfully pass a background check.
